Mad Kofi…

The UN Conference in Indonesia saw Annan take charge of relief efforts as the United States disbanded a ‘core group’ of aid-giving countries it initally led, throwing its weight behind the UN — a step likely to cut chaos hampering operations. Washington’s leading role in the humanitarian effort, which saw US navy ships and helicopters race into Indonesia and other affected countries, was seen as a slight to the world body which has struggled to oversee relief. The UN’s chief aid coordinator in the affected Indonesian region of Aceh, Michael Elmquist, said yesterday there has been a lack of communication with the US military which had led to inefficient use of their resources. ‘I think to be frank that perhaps we would have liked to discuss with the Americans at an earlier stage what would be the best way to use these assets,’ he said.

Sad Kofi…

Allegations that UN staff sexually abused Congolese girls as young as 13 reflects a grave, long-term problem among Blue Helmet peacekeepers and a civilian, said a UN report released. “The investigation … found that the problem was serious and ongoing,” said the internal affairs report, on 72 cases of alleged abuse.

The report said 20 cases were sufficiently detailed to move forward. One of those involved a civilian UN employee and the other 19 were UN peacekeepers.

Sources close to the cases said the civilian employee was a Frenchman, later jailed in France, and that the soldiers in question hail from Morocco, Nepal, Pakistan, South Africa, Tunisia and Uruguay.

Glad Kofi…

The United States agreed to hand the world body total control of the relief effort.

Even though, as reported at The Diplomad

…Sitting VERY late for two consecutive nights in interminable meetings with UN reps, hearing them go on about “taking the lead coordination role,” pledges, and the impending arrival of this or that UN big shot or assessment/coordination team, for the millionth time I realized that if not for Australia and America almost nobody in the tsunami-affected areas would have survived more than a few days. If we had waited for the UNocrats to get their act coordinated, the already massive death toll would have become astronomical. But, fortunately, thanks to “retrograde racist war-mongers ” such as John Howard and George W. Bush, as we sat in air conditioned meeting rooms with these UNocrats, young Australians and Americans were at that moment “coordinating” without the UN and saving the lives of tens-of-thousands of people.
