The Iranian Monafeqin

Iran held a grand peace parade in the troubled city of Ahwaz in southern Iran on Friday. In this staged “peace protest” the demonstrators carried the typical Anti- American, Anti-Israel and anti-Monafeqin signs. It is interesting that the city just had a major uprising where anywhere from 6-60+ protesters were killed by the military, and the government’s answer to this is to carry these hate signs down a street. It makes me wonder what the locals must have thought? As I looked at the only picture I could find of the event here I got the feeling that there was not that communal excitement seen here that you see in other rallies where the people have their heart, soul and whole being into it. Notice that the protesters in this rally are looking around, not focused, not uniform in their movement, etc.

So who are the Iranian Monafeqin that the officials want to group with the US and Israel? Iran News describes the Monefeqin as:

Monafeqin, or hypocrites, is the term Iranian state media and officials use to describe the People’s Mojahedin, Iran’s main opposition group.

The semi-official Jomhouri Islami daily wrote in its editorial today, “We must not ignore the seditious role being played by the Monafeqin in the events in Ahwaz”.

The Iranian officials are understandably threatened by any opposition group that will confront their mullahcracy. Therefore, they call the opposition (whether it is the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI), the Marxist Komala Party, the Mojahedin Khalq Organization (MKO) or other opposition parties) collectively- Monafeqin, meaning “hypocrite”. And, to further ingrain hatred for these groups, the government associates them with the ‘evil western forces’ as described here by Net Iran:

…The opponents of our system and revolution are either affiliated to the imperialist, reactionary and Zionist and capitalist circles of the world or had a tendency towards them.

The article further describes the secret of the “sustained success” of the Iranian revolutionary government:

This secret makes it clear that as long as the Islamic Revolution adheres to its main stands the Islamic Republic will remain secure. These main stands include the upholding of Islam, fighting the West and the U.S. and the world capitalist system, and maintaining firm ties with Muslim and revolutionary people. Moreover as long as the opponents and critics of the system are the forces supporting the West, the liberals, the reactionaries and/or Marxists the Islamic Republic will not be threatened by any danger…

…Despite the usual and journalistic misunderstanding the main problem of our country is neither democracy nor a narrow understanding of Islam nor the absence of a happiness and the spread of people wearing black clothes.

Accordingly, the winner in the present conditions will not be those who are drumming up liberalism, humanism, freedom of thought and the fight with the religion but those who can present solutions with orientation towards the people for the critical state of the economy.

If many people, especially women and the youth, had any illusion about concepts such as freedom, civil society and the feminist slogans they are now gradually being exposed to, not even one hundred such slogans are worth a penny, and if they are not a type of deception they are at least indicate a kind of misunderstanding and unwise illusion.

The Iranian mullahs have always been threatened by the monafeqin, or opposition, which is a typical reaction for such an oppressive regime. And, the Ayatollah’s Iran has also been extremely brutal in dealing with these forces. A 1988 letter from the Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazen describes the extermination of 5,000 Monefeqin prisoners:

In the Name of God,
the Compassionate, the Merciful,

As the treacherous Monafeqin [Mojahedin] do not believe in Islam
and what they say is out of deception and hypocrisy, and as their leaders
have confessed that they have become renegades, and as they are
waging war on God, and as they are engaging in classical warfare in
the western, the northern and the southern fronts, and as they are
collaborating with the Baathist Party of Iraq and spying for Saddam
against our Muslim nation, and as they are tied to the World Arrogance,
and in light of their cowardly blows to the Islamic Republic since its
inception, it is decreed that those who are in prisons throughout the
country and remain steadfast in their support for the Monafeqin
[Mojahedin], are waging war on God and are condemned to execution.

The regime continues to brutalize and exterminate those who threaten their control. Just this month the regime passed sentence on two more Monafeqin, Esmaeil Mohammadi– a father of five, and Hojjat Zamani . The two imprisoned Monafeqin have lost their appeals process from the regime and face imminent execution. They will be just the two latest “Monafeqin” to be exterminated by the mullahcracy. They will certainly not be the last.
