2 Iranian Women's Rights Activists Released- Another Goes Missing

Two women’s rights activists, Shadi Sadr (left) and Mahboubeh Abbasgolizadeh, who had been arrested on 4 March for taking part in a peaceful demonstration were released today.

The two Iranian women’s rights activists who were being held in Evin prison in Tehran were released earlier today:

Marzieh Khazari Ghahe, a woman’s rights activist who was arrested from her home by plainclothes officials on 11 March, has been missing since then and her parents have been unable to obtain any news of her, Iran press news reported on Monday. The officials who took the woman away said they were agents of the intelligence ministry, the report said. Ghahe had participated in a rally in Tehran on 8 March, International Women’s Day.

Meanwhile reports on Monday said two activists, Shadi Sadr and Mahboubeh Abbasgolizadeh, who had been arrested on 4 March for taking part in a peaceful demonstration have been released.

The two were part of a group of 33 arrested for staging the rally in support of five women who were standing trial for staging a demonstration last 12 July demanding legislation granting more rights to women in Iran.

Women’s Field reported that the families of the women had to pay an enormous sum to get the two women released:

Meydaan – Mahboubeh Abbasgholizadeh and Shadi Sadr were released today, after their families submitted $250,000 bail for Abbasgholizadeh and $200,000 for Sadr. Abbasgholizadeh and Sadr spent 16 days in detention in Evin prison ward 209, 10 of which was in solitary confinement.

The two women’s activists were welcomed by the women’s activists who were arrested on March 4 and their families outside Evin prison.

The offices of the two NGOs Sadr and Abbasgholizadeh were in charge of were shut down and sealed Thursday by the authorities for unspecified reasons.
