One Jerusalem Blogger Call With Israeli General Effie Eitam

One Jerusalem Blogger Conference Call—

On Wednesdy January 7, General (Res) Effie Eitam briefed a group of international bloggers on the Israeli War with Hamas:

GENERAL EITAM IS AN ISRAELI WAR HERO, A FORMER CABINET MINISTER, AND A SENIOR MEMBER OF THE SECURITY AND FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE IN THE KNESSET.

GENERAL EITAM RECEIVES REGULAR UPDATES AND PARTICIPATES IN FREQUENT MEETINGS WITH ISRAEL’S MINISTER OF DEFENSE AND THE DEFENSE FORCES CHIEF OF STAFF.

GENERAL EITAM HAS TWO SONS FIGHTING IN GAZA AND BEFORE OUR CALL HE WILL BE PAYING AN OFFICIAL VISIT TO THE FRONT LINES.

** One Jerusalem has the audio poster from this call today.

The situation now is as follows:

The Gaza targets were hit with the most advanced technology that is available today.
It did not stop the barrage of missiles effectively enough so 4 days ago a ground operation began.

Hamas pretended to represent itself as more than a terrorist organization. Like Hitler they came into power through the democratic process. In the last 3 years they’ve pretended to act as a government. The leaders are hiding in deep bunkers. There are no services provided whatsoever by the organization. The population has been abandoned. They are hiding in hospitals and among the people- women and children. Most of the aide has been stolen by Hamas. As a government they do not function. Gaza City has been surrounded by the IDF. The Gaza Strip has been divided into 3 parts by the IDF. No one can make sure that no more missiles will be launched but Hamas has been bitten and has suffered. The population is turning its back on this brutal organization.

As far as the international arena- Most of the world has been united in the last 2 weeks that Hamas deserved the attack. There are some voices coming now to stop the attacks after the UN school attack yesterday. Hamas said 30 people died in the attack.

Now the focus is on the tunnels between Egypt and Gaza. Israel must shut off the tunnels to shut off the fire. Egypt, Israel and international forces should operate on the Philadelphi Corridor to ensure the tunnels will not operate again. In the next few days there may be some arrangements made to stop the flow of goods by tunnel.

Israel must also ensure that the goods coming into Gaza do not go into the hands of Hamas.

Gaza City should remain as a free hunting zone for Hamas and its supporters. We need another 10 days to 2 weeks to effectively damage the organization.

The army is executing an operation at the highest professional level. Morale is high. It is not a walk in the park. It is still a war.

One Jerusalem: Why should the average American or European be interested in Israel seeing victory in this war?

Gen. Effie Eitam (Res): In the next 2 to 2 and a half years Iran will have nuclear weapons and is training their terror proxies in the Middle East. The 2006 war did not go well. This war is far beyond the security of Israel. This war should tell the West and the world that Israel is willing to defend itself.

Q; What about kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit?

A: We hope that he comes home safe. One of the demands of the ceasefire must be to bring this soldier home. We need to have patience. We do not want to occupy and be responsible for the people of Gaza again.

Q: What about Iran and its weapons program?

A: Israel will not allow Iran to have nuclear weapons. Even allowing Iran to have a nuclear bomb would change the lives of millions in the region and world. This conflict is the beginning of change and the beginning of the will of free countries to defend themselves. The time will come soon that an operation will have to be launched over Iran. God forbid that the world fool themselves that they can just talk to Iran to prevent them from obtaining nuclear weapons. This threat should be destroyed.

Q (Atlas): How is Israel responding to the disgusting anti-Semitic rallies?

A: Most Israelis are still supporting the efforts after 10 days of operations. It is natural that demonstrations like this will take place. In the West the Arab immigrants are now using the platform of democracy in order to demonstrate their learned hate of Israel. This itself is good. We see this in Israel. We see citizens with full rights who do protest like this. We must be careful that our societies and rules are not abused.

Breaking news comment: Israel is dropping leaflets on the Philadelphi Corridor telling citizens to leave within the hour.

Gen. Eitam: Turkey has been surprising with its reaction to the operations. Ass for the Bush Administration- the last act of friendship and commitment to Israel and the free world— this administration is giving support and room for Israel to defend itself.

Q: Strength of Hamas?

A: If Hamas really suffers and loses the confidence of the people it will be disastrous. They are grabbing children in the street for protection and they are hiding. They are holding the people in the front lines- in the houses. We have many stories of Hamas shooting people in their feet so they will not leave.

The audio is posted later at One Jerusalem.
Thank you, General Effie Eitam
