The Detroit NAACP faces office foreclosure over $47,451 in unpaid taxes to Wayne County.

The Detroit News reports Saturday that the branch is seeking a payment plan for the back 2008 taxes or it could lose its headquarters in the city.

Another $38,969 in taxes is owed for 2009. The newspaper reports that an appeal over the issue is before a state tax tribunal.

Executive Director Hester Wheeler said the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s newer branch office should be tax-exempt like the former building it once occupied. It moved into the new office in 2007.

Branch President the Rev. Wendell Anthony said last month that Detroit owed $46,000 in dues to the national NAACP.

The Detroit branch of the NAACP holds the largest sit-down dinner in the country.
The group invited controversial minister Jeremiah Wright to speak at the dinner in 2008.
