Obama Says “Not Raising Debt Ceiling Is Absurd” But Voted Against It in 2006

President Obama used the final press conference of his first term to warn congressional Republicans that he will not negotiate with them over the debt ceiling, saying “To even entertain the idea (of not raising the debt ceiling), it’s absurd.”

But back 2006 Barack Obama voted against raising the debt ceiling.

And in July 2008 Barack Obama said President Bush was “unpatriotic” and “irresponsible” for raising the debt by $4 trillion.
(Barack Obama added $5.8 trillion his first four years in office.)

From the video:

“The problem is, is that the way Bush has done it over the last eight years is to take out a credit card from the Bank of China in the name of our children, driving up our national debt from $5 trillion for the first 42 presidents — #43 added $4 trillion by his lonesome, so that we now have over $9 trillion of debt that we are going to have to pay back — $30,000 for every man, woman and child. That’s irresponsible. It’s unpatriotic.

More… As Kevin Eder says: “Had Obama been President during the debt ceiling debate of 2006, he would have been really, really mad at Senator Obama.”
