Biden Attacks Trump on Illegal Immigration: ‘Sick, Xenophobic, Know-Nothing’

Vice President Joe Biden attacked leading Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump over his strong stance against illegal immigration in remarks made Tuesday evening to a crowd gathered at the Vice Presidential mansion in Washington, D.C. for Hispanic Heritage Month.

A pool report picked up by news outlets relayed Biden’ caustic remarks.

Bloomberg News:

““I walked out of the house just as Trump was talking on the television,” Biden said. “Folks, this will not prevail. This will not prevail.””

CNN:

“”I don’t want anybody to be down right now about what’s going on in the Republican Party,” Biden said at the backyard reception, held around the swimming pool at his Washington residence.

“There’s one guy absolutely denigrating an entire group of people, appealing to the baser side of human nature, working on this notion of xenophobia in a way that hasn’t occurred in a long time, since the Know-Nothing Party back at the end of the 19th century,” Biden said. “Folks, the American people are with us. I know it doesn’t feel that way, but I’m telling you, I’m telling you the American people agree with us.”

“Biden said instead that Americans were more drawn to the message of Pope Francis, who will visit Washington next week.

“This will pass: the Trump stuff, and that stuff that you’re hearing on the other team,” he said. “This is about a sick message. This message had been tried on America before. We always, always, always, always, always overcome it.”

Reuters:

“At the end of his remarks, a few people in the crowd shouted, “Run Joe, run!”

“Biden, making the sign of the cross as he hurried away from the podium, said “Oh no, no, no, no, no” as if to stave off the topic.”
