Breaking: Police Officer Ambushed, Hit By Gunfire in Las Vegas …Update: Suspect in Custody

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department announced an officer was shot Sunday afternoon.

“We are currently responding to an #OIS in the area of Tropicana and Nellis. An officer has been struck by gunfire. No further info is avail.”

KVVU-TV reported a LVMPD spokesman saying the officer was shot in an ambush.

“Lt. Jeff Goodwin with LVMPD said someone tried to ambush the officer and fired three rounds. and the officer was hit.

“Officers did not fire any rounds. A condition for the police officer was not immediately available.”

On Friday a LVMPD officer was shot and wounded while investigating a burglary. The two suspects in that shooting were reported to have been caught by LVMPD.

UPDATE: KLAS-TV reports a suspect was taken in to custody at the scene.

“Police we going to the 99 Cents Store and stopped at a traffic signal. A person approached the police vehicle and starting firing at the officers. Officers didn’t return gunfire and arrested the shooting suspect.”

The Las Vegas Sun reported more details on the shooting from LVMPD spokeman Sgt. John Sheehan who said the officer was hit in the hand but was able to pursue and capture the shooter:

“… a man approached on foot, firing into their car and hitting one of the officers. The officers pursued the man and caught him a short distance later. He dropped his weapon and surrendered.”
