Speaker Paul Ryan announced on Wednesday he is retiring from Congress and will not seek reelection.
Brendan Buck, Counselor to the Speaker released a statement moments ago.
Paul Ryan made the official announcement at 10:15 AM Eastern.
Paul Ryan: I gave this job everything I had. The truth is it’s easy for it to take over everything in your life. Today I am announcing that this year is my last year as a member of the House… It’s almost hard to believe but I have been a member of Congress for two decades… I will be setting new priorities in my life… I’m really proud of what we’ve been able to do… Our two biggest achievements – tax cuts and second to build our nation’s military. These I see as lasting victories… I want to be clear I’m not done yet… I believe its future is bright… I tried to bring as much Wisconsin to Congress as possible…
Serving as speaker has been one of my life’s great honors. I’m proud of all we’ve done & am ready for new prioritie… https://t.co/9H2E8CLK0Q
