Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders Come Out in Support of Wayfair Workers Walkout Protesting Company Selling Beds for Migrant Children

Top tier Democrat presidential candidates Sen. Elizabeth Warren (MA) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (VT) issued statements Tuesday in support of the planned walkout by Wayfair workers at its Boston headquarters Wednesday in protest of the company selling beds to government contractor BCFS for migrant children held at the southern border.

Time reported on the bacground of the protest:

The planned protest comes after more than 500 employees signed a letter asking company leadership to cancel an order that would provide bedroom furniture to a border detention site in Texas, a Wayfair employee, who declined to be named, tells TIME. Wayfair’s CEO rejected the request.

The letter to executive leadership, a copy of which was provided to TIME, details that the company received an order of more than $200,000 worth of bedroom furniture from BCFS, a non-profit network that contracts with the government. The order would send supplies to Carrizo Springs, Texas, where a facility is reportedly being prepared to “detain up to 3,000 migrant children,” according to the letter. The Washington Post reported earlier this month that a private contractor will manage a temporary influx shelter in Carrizo Springs, where 1,600 migrant children are expected to be housed in a compound where oil field workers used to stay.

Warren came out against her home-state company, “I stand with the hundreds of @Wayfair employees who are planning to stage a walkout at their Boston headquarters tomorrow. The safety and well-being of immigrant children is always worth fighting for.”

Sanders, “I stand with the workers at Wayfair who are walking out tomorrow to protest the treatment of asylum seekers at the border. We cannot be a nation that stands for locking up little children. What these workers are doing is brave and necessary. #WayfairWalkout”

Wayfair rejected appeals this week from woke workers to stop selling furniture to facilities holding migrants on the border.

The walkout is being promoted on Twitter:

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) also issued statements in support of the walkout. (Link to TGP report on AOC Wayfair statement.)

The Trump War Room Twitter account posted a statement blasting Ocasio-Cortez and Pressley for supporting the walkout.

“To keep migrants comfortable while Democrats in Congress dither on humanitarian aid, the Trump Admin bought bedroom furniture from @Wayfair. Sadly, open-border advocates @AOC @RepPressley are bullying Wayfair to cancel the sale, depriving kids of good beds to sleep in. Heartless!”

Suggested protest chants the Wayfair Walkout:

“Hey, hey, ho, ho! Beds for kids have got to go!”

“What do we want?” “Suffering children!” “Why do we want them?” “Trump!”

“Wayfair, Wayfair, you can’t hide! We charge you with…selling clean comfortable beds to help migrant children get a good night’s sleep!”
