Relatives and neighbors, beyond the immediate circle of the gang members who abducted Ilan Halimi, were told about the Jewish hostage and dropped in to participate in the torture.

…Investigating magistrate Corinne Goetzmann detained seven of the suspects on charges of kidnapping, sequestration, torture, acts of barbarism and premeditated murder in an organized gang. They will also be charged with targeting the victim on the basis of his religion, French for hate crime, which carries a stiffer penalty. Justice Minister Pascal Clément explained that the charge of anti-Semitism was based on the fact that one of the suspects had declared to the judge that they picked a Jew because Jews are supposed to be rich. But, according to reports in the French press, some of the suspects in police custody said that they tortured Ilan with particular cruelty simply because he was Jewish.
No longer able to deny or play down the racial motive, the investigation is entering a new phase. One of the most troubling aspects of this affair is the probable involvement of relatives and neighbors, beyond the immediate circle of the gang, who were told about the Jewish hostage and dropped in to participate in the torture.

Searches of the suspects home revealed Salafi documents:
French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy revealed that house-searches of suspects related to the brutal murder and torture of a young Jewish man, 23-year-old Ilan Halimi, produced Salafi (radical Islamic) and pro-Palestinian documents.
The European Union of Jewish Students is outraged at the reluctance of French authorities to see this as anti-semitic activity:
the European Union of Jewish Students (EUJS) are outraged and horrified by the murder of Ilan Halimi, the 23-year-old Parisian Jew who was abducted, tortured and murdered by a gang in a suburb of the French capital. We are particularly concerned by the French authorities’ initial reluctance to see this crime as an extreme form of anti-Semitism and welcome Prime Minister de Villepin’s statement categorizing the act as a hate crime.
This vicious act is a crude indication of the rise of anti-Semitism as tensions continue to flare throughout the European continent. Religious intolerance continues to fuel violence and conflict in France and elsewhere.

Anti-semitic crime has increased in France over the past few years:
As home to Western Europe’s largest populations of Jews and Muslims, France saw a surge in anti-Semitic crime starting in 2000 after tensions flared between Israelis and Palestinians in the Middle East.
Since then, officials have walked a thin line, making forceful denunciations of anti-Semitism while taking care not to offend a Muslim community estimated at 5 million. France is home to about 600,000 Jews.
But the enmity between Palestinians and Israelis has fanned Islamic militancy in France and even spilled into classrooms. Some Muslim students, for instance, have refused to attend classes on the Holocaust.
** Audrey Lorleach, the blond “honeypot” behind the murder of Ilan Halimi. **
Ilan was lured by a young beautiful blond woman, Audrey Lorleach, who was in love with one of the thugs behind the crime. It was not the first time that she had done this and she says “she didn’t know what happened to the victim”:
Lorleach, whose computer-generated picture appeared in newspapers, gave herself up to police Thursday after a friend, Murielle Izourad, also 24, recognised her.
She is reported to have provided the investigators with “significant” information. “This young girl was very brave in turning herslf in because she was horrified by what happened,” her lawyer Jean Balan said.
He claimed she had got involved because she was “in love with one of the gang members” now being held.
She is said to have told police she picked up young men but did not know what then happened to them.
According to the Paris prosector’s office her role was to act as bait for two victims but having failed to do so was sidelined.
