Kofi Annan Welcomes Iranians to UN Human Rights Council

Kofi Annan welcomed the invited Iranian delegation to the Inaugural Human Rights Council session in Geneva last week. The Iranians immediately blasted the US for human rights violations and promoted the return of Palestinians to their homeland.

The US did not seek a seat on the resurrected council with its member states China, Cuba, Algeria, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, although it was endorsed by Jimmy Carter.

Annan said after meeting Mottaki on Thursday that he believes Tehran is taking ‘very seriously’ an offer of incentives to roll back its nuclear program. (AP Photo/Nicholas Ratzenboeck)

HERE is the video of Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki addressing the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. (18 minutes)

Here are a few of Mottaki’s attacks on the US and Israel:

** Suspected “people” from different places are kept without charge in the horrifying and sometimes unknown presence in the remote detention centers for months if not years, to be tortured in solitary confinements for interrogations such as Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib. (5:40)

** Laws were enacted (by the US) to apprehend the suspected people without having to observe the minimum standards of protecting human rights of detainees. (6:20)

** The Council should support the right to self determination of all the original inhabitants of the entire Palestine. It should also promote respect for the election on January 25th which resulted in the forming of the Palestinian government of Hamas. (15:40)

** The Council should further promote the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homeland. (16:05)

** Please note while listening to this 18 minute US bashing rant by Mottaki that just 9 days earlier women’s rights protesters were clubbed in the streets of Tehran.

Interesting that an Iranian official in Qom announced a continued crackdown on protesters just three days after these human right’s session.

In another recent outrage, the Iranian Regime has detained six brothers from a prominent Ahwazi family. Tragically, three of the brothers from the Bawi family are charged with “war against Allah” and are sentenced to death.
