Al Qaeda #2 Al-Zawahri Joins With Jimmy Carter on Hamas

UPDATE: It is interesting that Jimmy is silent about this.

On June 19, 2007 in Dublin, Ireland Jimmy Carter pledged his support to Hamas and against the US and Israel:

During his speech to Ireland’s annual Forum on Human Rights, the 83-year-old former president said monitors from his Carter Center observed the 2006 election that Hamas won. He said the vote was “orderly and fair” and Hamas triumphed, in part, because it was “shrewd in selecting candidates,” whereas a divided, corrupt Fatah ran multiple candidates for single seats.

Far from encouraging Hamas’ move into parliamentary politics, Carter said the U.S. and Israel, with European Union acquiescence, sought to subvert the outcome by shunning Hamas and helping Abbas to keep the reins of political and military power.

“That action was criminal,” he said in a news conference after his speech.

The United States and Israel decided to punish all the people in Palestine and did everything they could to deter a compromise between Hamas and Fatah,” he said.

Carter said the U.S. and others supplied the Fatah-controlled security forces in Gaza with vastly superior weaponry in hopes they would “conquer Hamas in Gaza” — but Hamas routed Fatah in the fighting last week because of its “superior skills and discipline.”

On June 25, 2007, Al-Zawahiri, Al-Qaeda’s second in command, joined Carter today in pleadging his support for Hamas extremists:

Al-Qaida’s deputy leader called on Muslims around the world to back Hamas with weapons, money and attacks on U.S. and Israeli interests in a Web audiotape Monday, urging the Palestinian militant group to unite with al-Qaida’s “holy warriors” after its takeover of Gaza.

…Al-Zawahri urged Hamas to implement Islamic law in Gaza, telling it, “Taking over power is not a goal but a means to implement God’s word on earth.”

“Unite with mujahedeen (holy warriors) in Palestine … and with all mujahedeen in the world in the face of the upcoming attack where Egyptians and Saudis are expected to play part of it,” he added, suggesting that the two countries intend to attack Hamas to uproot its control of Gaza.

“Provide them (Hamas) with money, do your best to get it there, break the siege imposed on them by crusaders and Arab leader traitors,” al-Zawahri, who is Osama bin Laden’s top deputy, said, addressing Muslims around the world. “Facilitate weapons smuggling from neighboring countries.”

“We can support them by targeting the crusader and Zionist interest wherever we can,” al-Zawahri said.

Via News From Bangladesh:

The visit to Nepal by former US president Jimmy Carter has not contributed substantially to the peace process, nor has it strengthened good governance and the possibility of free and fair elections to the Constituent Assembly in the foreseeable future.

What it has achieved is to shore up PM Girija Prasad Koirala’s autocratic regime.
