DEM CONGRESSMAN CAUGHT IN SEX & HUSH MONEY SCANDAL! …Update: Shady Payments?

I wrote about this scandal on September 20th:

Rep. Foley’s Replacement Tim Mahoney (D-FL) Already Caught Up in His Own Sex Scandal

The mainstream media is reporting on the story today:

Congressman’s $121,000 Payoff to Alleged Mistress

Apparently, ex-staffers are talking.

The affair between Congressman Tim Mahoney and Patricia Allen began, according to current and former staffers, in 2006 when Mahoney was campaigning for Congress against Foley, promising “a world that is safer, more moral.”
(ABC News)

Representative Tim Mahoney (D-FL) was busted for paying off his mistress $121,000.
ABC reported:

West Palm Beach Congressman Tim Mahoney (D-FL), whose predecessor resigned in the wake of a sex scandal, agreed to a $121,000 payment to a former mistress who worked on his staff and was threatening to sue him, according to current and former members of his staff who have been briefed on the settlement, which involved Mahoney and his campaign committee.

Mahoney, who is married, also promised the woman, Patricia Allen, a $50,000 a year job for two years at the agency that handles his campaign advertising, the staffers said.

A Mahoney spokesperson would not answer questions about the alleged affair or the settlement, but said Allen resigned of her own accord and “has not received any special payment from campaign funds.”

Senior Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives, including Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL), the chair of the Democratic Caucus, have been working with Mahoney to keep the matter from hurting his re-election campaign, the Mahoney staffers said…

Emanuel’s spokesperson said Emanual had not had any further contacts with Mahoney on the subject and did not know the woman involved worked on Mahoney’s Congressional staff until informed by ABC News.

That’s BS.
I knew about it here in Missouri. It’s hard to believe Rahm Emanuel just heard about it from ABC.
There’s more- Mahoney had more affairs and ABC posted a copy of a phone message from Mahoney to Allen threatening her:

Friends of Allen told ABC News that Allen sought to break off the affair when she learned Mahoney was allegedly involved in other extra-marital relationships at the same time.

Her friends say she told them Mahoney threatened that ending the relationship could cost her the job.

“You work at my pleasure,” Congressman Mahoney told Allen on a January 20, 2008 telephone call that was recorded and played for Mahoney staffers. ABC News was provided a copy.

Since we’re on the topic… Today would be a good day to donate to Republican Tom Rooney who is running against Mahoney this year.

RightBlog’s Slate is also promoting Rooney for Congress this year.

UPDATE: This story stinks.
Let’s look at this. The Mahoney people said that there was no special payments from campaign funds to Patricia Allen. ABC also reported that there was an agreement made between Allen and Mahoney in March and that Allen would receive $121,000.00 in hush money.

Now look at the Mahoney expenditures:

Open Secrets reported that Rep. Mahoney payed a total of $260,000 to a media consulting firm in Nashville Fletcher Rowley Chao Riddle in March and July of this year:

Here is another look at Mahoney’s expenditures:

Fletcher Rowley Chao Riddle did media work for Mahoney in 2006.
There is no easily accessible record of what work they might have done for Mahoney this election cycle.

So, someone tell me– Is this the hush money?
And, is it legal or ethical to pay this from his congressional account and declare this as an expenditure?
It doesn’t appear to be appropriate.
I need some help on this one.

UPDATE 2: What I am hearing is that these payments may have been part of the deal between Allen and Mahoney. Whether or not something more comes of this is uncertain. For now, it appears that Democrats are in big trouble in District 16.
