Four days after it began, the debate over Santa Claus’ race has now reached the high school level, as a teacher in Albuquerque, New Mexico was disciplined after allegedly telling an African-American student “Santa Claus is white.”
During a Christmas-themed costume day at Cleveland High School, ninth-grader Christopher Rougier showed up wearing a Santa hat and beard, to which his teacher apparently said, “Don’t you know Santa Clause is white? Why are you wearing that?”
Officials at the high school declined to name the teacher or detail the punishment handed down. The teacher apparently “self-reported” the incident, told officials he made a “stupid mistake,” and has since apologized to the family. He was not fired, but Rougier was no longer enrolled in his class.
