Breaking: Shooting at Ft. Lauderdale Airport; Report of Five Dead, Eight Wounded

UPDATE: 1:30 P.M. CST: Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida told the media that five people were killed and eight wounded.

UPDATE 12:30 P.M. CST: MSNBC reports nine people were shot and that three of the victims have died. MSNBC is not sure if there were twelve or nine people shot. The shooter is reportedly in custody.

The shooting is reported to have taken place at Terminal 2 near the baggage claim and taxi stand areas.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office posted several updates to Twitter before 1 p.m. CST saying, “Confirmed: Shooting at Fort Lauderdale -Hollywood International Airport with multiple people dead. One subject in custody…Communications received a call around 12:55 p.m. about shots fired at 100 Terminal Drive at Fort Lauderdale -Hollywood Int’l Airport…Confirming multiple people are dead, and a number of people were transported to a hospital from @FLLFlyer. Upper level of airport open.”

There are reports of a shooting at the Fort Lauderdale- Hollywood International , Florida airport Friday afternoon. Ari Fleischer, former press secretary for President George W. Bush, tweeted from the airport that he heard shows and was told by police the was one gunman who shot five people.

A photo posted to Twitter purports to show a victim being aided by police.

“Shots fired at FLL airport. Guy is bleeding profusely. Supposedly others are shot on the lower level at Delta Term 2.”

Screen shot appears to show a victim being tended to on the tarmac.

Ft Lauderdale shooting survivor John Schlicher (MSNBC typo on chyron) described people at the baggage carousel being shot all around him. The gunman said nothing, had time to reload his handgun. He was shooting people in the head. Schlicher saw several elderly people shot.

Mark Lea, another survivor, tells MSNBC the shooter reloaded three times. When he was done shooting he lay in the ground spread-eagle and waited for police to take him in to custody.
