BOOM! Sheriff David Clarke Set to Join the Trump Administration

According to reports, outgoing Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke will be joining the Trump administration. Clarke submitted his resignation on Thursday, effective today.

POLITICO reports:

David Clarke, the controversial outgoing sheriff of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, is expected to take a job in the Trump administration, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

Clarke resigned as sheriff on Thursday. A regular presence on Fox News, Clarke has become a well-known figure in conservative circles in recent years. He is also an avowed supporter of President Donald Trump, and he spoke at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland last year.

But he has come under fierce criticism amid a series of deaths in the Milwaukee County prison, including that of Terrill Thomas, who died of dehydration last year after guards turned off the water in his cell.

Trump has been one of Clarke’s most vocal cheerleaders, and even promoted his book on Twitter earlier this month.

It’s unclear what job Clarke will take in the administration, but one of the sources said he’s expected to join the White House. Clarke likely won’t be offered a Senate-confirmed role because his nomination would face opposition from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

Clarke submitted a resignation letter to Milwaukee County Clerk George Christenson, Journal Sentinel reports.

Journal Sentinel:

Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. — the controversial, Stetson-wearing official who rose to national prominence with his no-holds-barred conservative rhetoric — resigned his office Thursday.

Clarke, who is in his fourth term, submitted a resignation letter to Milwaukee County Clerk George Christenson on Thursday afternoon. The sheriff was attending the convention of the National Fraternal Order of Police in Nashville and could not be reached for comment.

“Pursuant to Wisconsin Statute 17.01, this communication is submitted as the notice of my resignation as Sheriff of Milwaukee County commencing Aug. 31, 2017, at 11:59 p.m.,” stated Clarke’s resignation letter.

The news of the resignation was first reported by conservative talk show host Mark Belling.

David Clarke is a very vocal supporter of President Trump.

Clarke previously announced he would be joining the Trump administration in the Department of Homeland Security. Sheriff David Clarke will be an assistant secretary in the Department of Homeland Security.

The Washington Post reported in mid-June that an adviser to Sheriff Clarke confirmed that he would be withdrawing his name for consideration for a position at the Department of Homeland Security.
