UPDATE: Voters in Canada’s oil-rich Alberta province overwhelmingly rejected a process that could have led to a binding referendum on secession from Canada.

According to preliminary figures reported by CBC News and unofficial tallies from Elections Alberta, roughly 76.5% of ballots cast favored remaining a province of Canada, while 23.5% supported the government commencing the legal process for a future binding vote on separation.

The vote, held Monday, was not a direct ballot on independence. Instead, the key question asked: “Should Alberta remain a province of Canada, or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?”

A remain win changes nothing legally and keeps the status quo. A majority for the process option would have obligated steps toward a future vote under Canada’s Clarity Act framework, though actual secession would still require constitutional amendments and negotiations that could take years.

Mark Carney, who grew up in Alberta and campaigned aggressively for unity in the final days, welcomed the result. In a statement, he said Albertans “chose unity, to build together, and to take care of each other. Above all, Albertans chose Canada,” adding that the province and the country would “move forward together with renewed purpose and high ambition.”

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, who called the referendum under pressure from separatists in her United Conservative Party despite personally opposing independence, said she was “very pleased” with the early numbers showing “widespread support for remaining in Canada” and that “Albertans have voted for a stronger Alberta in a united Canada.”

Alberta referendum ballot –

According to the Alberta Elections page:

This is a non-binding, consultative referendum. A “No” (Remain) result changes nothing legally. A “Yes” (Leave) majority would not start separation: under the federal Clarity Act and the ’s 1998 Secession Reference, only a clear majority on a clear question obliges Ottawa and the provinces to negotiate — and any actual secession would require a constitutional amendment.

Either way, the political consequences arrive immediately; the legal ones, if any, would take years.

More than 1.35 million Albertans, or 43% of eligible voters, cast advance or special ballots ahead of Monday’s referendum, according to the AP.
